Sunday discussions

This post is the overview for the discussions we had on Sunday PM (April 8th). People attending the discussion group are writing posts so visit their blogs and comment to keep the conversations going.

During the conversations people also mentioned books, journals, artists etc... We said that all these references will be posted by people here on this blog post in the comments below. People posting references they mentioned can you please put as sentenced about the reference so people who were not in the conversation (or people who were but not taking notes) can be reminded of what the reference material is about. – thank you.

We spoke about ideas and experiences of what learning is and what it looks like in the people we teach and also in our own learning journey. Including thinking about differences in approaches to teaching according to the age of the person ‘learning’.

We spoke about ideas about retention of ideas, ‘work’ and technique and the roles strategies of mindfulness, visualisation, and rest have in these areas.

We talked about analysing your writing and asking yourself questions in order to deepen your critical thinking and write with more depth.

I said I would write something about the idea of analysis ‘v’ interpretation. Story ‘v’ truth.

I will be writing a separate post on this.

Please comment below about the discussion and with references etc…

  1. Apologies I missed this session as no connection this end. Would have liked to hear more about analysis and interpretation and will enjoy your post Story vs Truth. Is this subjective vs objective? Of course there are multiple realities and how I interpret something will no doubt be different due to my own experience. Much hinges on the experiences we bring and our embodied perspective. Does it? My blogspot is jvsyd.blogspot.co.uk Thanks Adesola. Keep blogging!!!

    1. I agree I think the way in which we interpret things will depend on how we have experienced them. Although I think there are some instances where this should not play a part i.e interpreting data and research, we may have out own individual interpretation and beliefs but in order to stay true to the facts and findings one must remain objective as not to influence how these are presented.

  2. Hi, here is the title of an article, I have read recently and feel links to the topic of adult learning, that we have discussed on Sunday, there is a section for example on how our neuro motor system responds to metaphor, analogy and imagery. Even though it focuses on ballet dancers, I think most of it also applies to other dance techniques as well. Looking forward to reading your blogs!

    2. hey, have you also read, The Adult Learner The Definitive Classica in Adult Education and Human Resource Development by Malcom S. Knowles, Elwood F. Holton III, and Richard A. Swanson? I am finding it a very good read, and also good for looking at myself as a learner.

  3. Hello,

I would like to share some literature that came to mind during the discussion about 'ideas in learning' and how to incorporate creative learning methods into our teaching practice.

Franklin, E. 1996. Dance Imagery for Technique and Performance. Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics.
Fritha, F. 2010. Anatomy for Dance. Journal for Dance Education. 10 (3), 77-82.

Please feel free to comment on my most recent blog about 'Teaching Effectiveness Feedback'. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts.
