Monday Module One focus AOLs

In this discussion we talked about AOLs. Apart grom the claim of prior learning thatvthey make to the University why have them along side Module One? We talked about how they help us unpack our current practice by looking at the skills and knowledge the experience of our careers has given us. How this influences ‘how’ we practice. So practice is not a job title “I am a dance teacher” or  “I am a singer in the West End” but about how we do these things. We look atvthis in terms of threads that run throught the tjingscwe do (even ones not obviously associated with our profession practice). These threads are where our life learning mamifests. We also spoke sbout the confidence to claim your learning and also the confidence recognising it and linking it to wider feilds gives you.

Those in the conversations are posting thoughts and links to further pists in the comments below. What fo you feel?... please comment below.

  1. Thank you for facilitating the discussion last night, it's talk of connections and communications has sent me off on a winding path thought process;

    Hopefully strengthened connections and communication can help us illuminate our AOL's

  2. Hi Adesola and Helen, ditto to Stella, thank you for last nights discussion.

    Had lots of thoughts on yesterdays discussions - making myself question what my practice actually is (and I certainly can't answer at this stage).

    Put together a couple of confused thoughts here: https://harryfulleylovemappblog.blogspot.com/2019/10/30092019-skype-thoughts-on-career.html

  3. Though I'm from Module 3, I attended this Monday's Skype and thought of sharing this! Here's my blog I wrote this time last year on Module 1 AOLs https://dilinikandyandance.blogspot.com/2018/10/knowing-and-learning.html

  5. Thank you for the recap of the discussion! I wasn't able to join the conversation, ironically due to my professional practice at the same time here in California, but I was able to listen to the recording. It was helpful to hear the insights as I brainstormed my AOL's and read literature around my topics. It was valuable to take time for myself and unpack the job title of "Dance Teacher" and look at all of the components that are entailed in having that position... teacher yes, but also facilitator, collaborator, communicator, emotional impactor/supporter, and the list goes on. It also made me reflect on what new things I have learned on the job: working with students who have learning disabilities, giving grades in dance class, writing curriculum, and more. There are so many hats that a successful teacher must wear, beyond the actual teacher hat in the studio.

  6. This discussion was insightful for me. Mostly because I felt at odds with understanding what we were trying to discuss regarding the AOLs, so it did help indeed. As Simon mentions, very early in my career I learnt the impact of how I was teaching had on my students. This made me learnt about being very responsible as to how I addressed any challenges and encouraged students to be more confident, since, confidence forms such a big part to being a successful dancer but also, a person, naturally. The AOLs are making me reflect on how I practice and why, doing it in such a manner creates a learning experience that I take with me and assimilate into other areas of work and life.

  7. Hi everyone, I am new to the blogger and could not comment or interact with anyone since we started. However, I am here and I really excited to be part of this international community.
    This was my second experience with Skype's conference, I found its a bit weird not to see face to face but the discussion was extremely helpful in term of what is AOLs about and thank Adesola for reminding Practice is not a job title. Yes, in this 21 century we are all connecting and collaborating directly or indirectly, a single job is not doing one task but multiple tasks or roles. After those years of working in dance field, I have seen my self growing in different roles from a learner, performer, educator, collaborator, facilitator, inspirer, connector, communicator, nurturing person and so on.
    Thank for the Module One discussion and it is quite scary to look at myself to reflect my experience in learning perspective eventhough we all grow up with mirror in studio:)
