Writing Workshop (September)

Peter’s workshop lectures were really helpful and informative last week. Here's a video on MDX Play. This overviews what we did at the beginning (free-writing & reviewing). (https://www.play.mdx.ac.uk/media/Generative+Writing+%28or+using+writing+to+generate+new+ideas%29/1_kudr70i2

Feel free to post that on the blog.

Peter says:

In terms of the main points of the session, I was trying to emphasise the idea that writing comes in many shapes, and is used for all sorts of different purposes. The most important purposes, I think, relate to finding our own voice, through exploring thoughts, generating new ideas and trying out ways of relating them to the ideas of other people, in our field but also outside it.

I hope this is a reassuring message to counter concerns that many students have at university that writing is just about assessment and fitting in with other people's conventions and expectations. While it is important to be aware of the expectations of others, it's also important to feel that we have choice over the extent to which we adhere to them.”

Peter also sent some slides these and the video of the workshop are on your Programme Page on UniHub in the folder called

'Middlesex Student Resources: dyslexia and academic writing support, questions about finance, Student Union'

  2. Hello:)
Unfortunately i was not able to participate in P. Thomas online writing session. (I’m still struggling with bad internet connection and fortunately i have some small amount of time to share with you thoughts about it). I saw the 5min video about freewriting and i would like to thank about clearance, good tips and advises how to write good.i think the scariest moment for the writer is always just before he start and when we start we should not (like Peter said) hesitate, stop the flow and we should keep going. Writing comes in many shapes and the most important is (like in everything what we are doing in life) trust to ourselves and relate to finding our own voice and way of expressing the ideas. So i can say that this helpful video encouraged me and my writing and gave me tool for thinking, what should i ignore during the free flow and to be strict to myself.
Ill share those thoughts on my blog too and hopefully ill be with you on Sunday discussion on October 11th.

  5. Hi! Unfortunately i could not be part of academic writing practice on 28th with P. Thomas but i saw the helpful and useful 5 minutes video which (in this for me difficult time give me hope and good tips and advises for tool thinking, for time limit and what should I ignore during the freewriting. Very interesting and i will try to apply ASAP. As he said writing come in many shapes and the most important thing is to relate to finding our own voice through writing and no to lose ourselves, ideas and not to fit in with other people's expectations. There is a saying that the scariest moment for the writer is always just before he start. This is for the writer the most difficult part, and like Peter said let's thoughts emerge, do not stop and just keep going, and i would add never, never, never, never, never give up:) i hope ill manage to connect on next writing workshop on October 15th. (i do not know how many times i wrote this, because of my internet troubles, im sorry for that:)
hopefully see you virtually next week
